terms and their definitions.

Web Design and Development Glossary:
World Wide Web (WWW) - A system of Internet servers that
support specially formatted documents. The documents are
formatted in a markup language called php (HyperText Markup
Language) that supports links to other documents, as well
as graphics, audio, and video files. This means you can
jump from one document to another simply by clicking on
hot spots. Not all Internet servers are part of the World
Wide Web. When you have a web site designed it must have
a domain name registered and be pointed to the correct
web servers to show on the world wide web. Simply designing
a website will not make it available for people to view.
In most cases your web hosting company can help you establish
a web hosting account and set your web site up so it is
available on the world wide web.
There are several applications called Web browsers that
make it easy to access the World Wide Web; The most popular
web browsers include Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera,
Mozilla and Safari (For the Mac).
Internet - A global network connecting millions of computers.
More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data,
news and opinions.
Unlike online services, which are centrally controlled, the Internet
is decentralized by design. Each Internet computer, called a host, is
independent. Its operators can choose which Internet services to use
and which local services to make available to the global Internet community.
Remarkably, this anarchy by design works exceedingly well. There are
a variety of ways to access the Internet. To gain access to the internet
you will need an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Web Browser - Short for Web browser, a software application
used to locate and display Web pages. The two most popular
browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet
Explorer. Both of these are graphical browsers, which means
that they can display graphics as well as text. In addition,
most modern browsers can present multimedia information,
including sound and video, though they require plug-ins
for some formats.
HTML - (HyperText Markup Language) -- The coding language
used to create Hypertext documents for use on the World
Wide Web. php looks a lot like old-fashioned typesetting
code, where you surround a block of text with codes that
indicate how it should appear, additionally, in HTML you
can specify that a block of text, or a word, is linked
to another file on the Internet. HTML files are meant to
be viewed using a World Wide Web Client Program. HTML files
are the most commonly used files for web site design and
development. Other commonly used files used in web development
are .php, .asp, .aspx, .jsp, and .shtml. These files are
associated with different types of web development languages.
Most of them allow you to use dynamic web pages on your
site.
Static Web Page - A static web page is used in web development
when the page will remain the same or the pages do not
require dynamic web content.
Dynamic Web Page - A dynamic web page is used in web design
when the information on the page is constantly changing
or being updated from a database.
Search Engine Optimization - The process of choosing targeted
keyword phrases related to a site, and ensuring that the
site places well when those keyword phrases are part of
a Web search. Search engine optimization is a very dynamic
aspect of web development. Simply put, Search Engine Optimization
(SEO) is optimizing your web pages so the search engines
will rank your page higher than your competitions web pages.
This will make it easier for people to find your web site
when searching for services that relate to you and your
business.
Graphic Design - The use of graphic elements and text
to communicate an idea or concept.
Cross Browser Compatibility - Internet Browsers read code
differently. In fact, some browsers cannot read certain
code at all. Internet viewers use a variety of browsers.
It is a good idea to design your website so the vast majority
of viewers can get the full benefit of your site. The best
website designs are compatible with the most popular browsers,
thus being cross-browser compatible. When choosing a web
design company you must keep your audience in mind. Different
people use different browsers and having a web site that
is cross browser compatible will ensure that all visitors
to your website are presented with the same look and feel
regardless of their browser preference.
